The seeds of these five plants have a warming effect and are good for the stomach and intestines, especially in cases of chills and inflammations, as well as other upsets.
An infusion of fennel and anise is also appreciated for its good effect when small children suffer from stomach and bowel problems of any kind. Nursing mothers will find dill helpful in stimulating lactation.
A number of the Allium varieties - there are about 250 in all -serve as vegetables, spice plants and remedies. They contain garlic oil, its chief component being allyl sulphide, which is responsible for their characteristic smell. All varieties of Allium, for example leeks, are good for the blood vessels, keeping them elastic and preventing premature aging. If you eat plenty of chives, garlic, and, in the spring, bear's garlic (ramsons) - all of which are from the Allium family - intestinal worms will be eliminated.
